You need to have some knowledge of perspective and I am using three points perspective in this tutorial.

In this tutorial I start with a rough perspective guide using column and roof beams. First I have to get the background together using three points perspective to convey the looking up camera viewpoint. Inside the assembly line can be many beams, hooks and equipment. Then I just imagine roll after roll of robots being transport from one station to the next. Then I use the top lighting from the outside through the glass rooftop. At this stage, I only focus on big shapes, perspective and composition to get the overall look and feel of the scene first. Using lasso tool and transform tool can be very useful in making perspective grids. As long as you know where the vanishing point is then you can just transform any object and point it there. Once the big shapes are align with perspective then I can design a robot. Then I make duplicates and give the scene perspective, scales and depth of fields. You have to make sure your perspective is correct or very close, then you can add the detail to the background and characters as I go on painting.

I use a lot of lasso tool and transform tool technique in this video. Hopefully this can be really helpful to you all.
This time though I have a good idea of what I want to paint. But sometime, I will just let the visual shapes and color guide me as I go.
Again I usually start my image from shapes and build those shape up along with perspective and composition in mind. Then lighting or value.
