In this tutorial I start with a rough idea of a sand and rock desert using complimentary color scheme (orange sand and blue/gray rocks). I first explore with shape of sand area surrounded by rock using free form lasso tool. I am using the texture brushes to convey materials of the rock. And for the sand I leave it smooth using flat brushes. Then I give the rock some geometry using light and shadow. Then I add a big mining factory in the background. At this stage, I only focus on big shapes, lighting and base to get the overall look and feel of the scene first before I can design the detail of the costume. In this case, I chose overcast lighting. Then I add a mining machine or truck and some space miners to show scale. Once you have a good silhouette with lighting and good form then we can start doing a bit more detail.
You have to first take care of the big shape then you can think about adding design and little detail.
I use a lot of normal layer and just paint like I would paint traditionally in this video. But with a lot of help from custom brushes. Hopefully this can be really helpful to you all.

Again I usually start my image from shapes and build those shape up along with composition in mind. The lighting and value.

Tips on speedpainting. Keep it simple first and make your image clear and easy to read or identify.
