Driders are centaur-like creatures in the game, appearing as drow from the waist up, with their lower portions replaced by the abdomen and legs of immense spiders. They are most commonly found in the Underdark. This character design Concept Art process is just one of those out of nowhere, based on many ancient fantasy epic fairy tale about deadly spider demons. Spider are depicted as symbol of evil and have their own right to many scary tales all over the world; China, Japan, Greek, etc.

I am again attempt to find a balance between beauty and creepy, soft motherly feminine and deadly and poisonous. I think life is a paradox, and so do beautiful women. At the time I was thinking along the line of what if I visit hell then I met its’ princess. How do I make it so mystical, scary, and beauty. I make a feel concept like this a while back, they are my favorite things to do and paint. Here is a quick process of drawing and painting Spider Demoness.

This I just did yesterday, but I feel like painting it so I scanned it in right after. Sometimes some idea just cannot wait. Step two, After scanned it in, I cropped it to get the composition I want. Step three, Then I add background color using overlay or multiply…doesn’t matter whatever gets the job done. Then I use darker color to separate the silhouette of the body out from the background. Step four, Color them away…get the base color idea of what I want them to look like. Step five, Assigning value along with the on going color. Xia, I forgot where I read this (maybe from one of your posts), that fantasy objects should have ‘realistic’ aspect to look real. Since I saw so many portrait / character design artists study anatomy to make their drawings ‘right’. Lately I have been reading some animal anatomy books and I’ve been thinking that animal anatomy might be able to help me construct some ‘realistic aspect’ to my fantasy creatures (since most of fantasy objects are usually combination of some animals). Do you think I should continue to work on it, or not?

Thanks a lot for all your replies! 🙂
