Speedpainting tutorial Eddard Stark Game of Throne. Learn how to speed paint digital painting tutorial from video instruction and step by step images. It’s been a while since I updated. 😉
Well, in this post I just did a painting study of a screenshot from Game of Throne, Eddard Stark. It took me about a little over an hour. Once in a while, I will do painting study from reference just to get my lighting in shape. Screenshot are one good example of good reference because it already have the good composition and lighting. But the best reference in practice is usually from the photo an artists themselves took it.
Anyway, I usually start off from scribble as usual then build a silhouette from that. Once I have the correct shape in place, then I will start building up value and find the correct place for each patch of value and color. Painting is basically a placement of shapes in different color and value, once you arrange them in the right spot, you have a good painting.
About Eddard Stark from Game of Throne, sometimes called “Ned”, is Lord of Winterfell, Lord Paramount of the North, and Warden of the North. He and Catelyn Tully have five children, and he has a bastard son, Jon Snow. Eddard is known for his sense of honor and justice. Though his family finds him kind, some consider his reserved personality a sign of coldness and disdain. After Jon Arryn’s death, King Robert asked Eddard to replace him as Hand of the King, the monarch’s closest advisor. Ned would have preferred to decline the request, but went south at his wife’s urging to investigate Arryn’s death. Well, you can read the whole story from “Song of Ice and Fire” series or watch it on HBO.
Here is a final speed painting study of Eddard Stark.

Below are step by step images painting process. Step one, I drew rough lines to establish his head, cape and the whole body with the pose. Step two, I then painted the figure to set up basic light and shadow using light gray, medium gray and dark gray. Step three, I used black the emphasis the shadow a bit more in detail. Step four, at this point I can add his skin tone and fur collar color. Step five, this is almost final I can paint his fur texture, hair and metal on the sword. And now we are done.
