Edge lighting comes from behind to touch the sides of the object, separating it from the background. Edge lighting occurs out doors when the sun is low in the sky and shining toward the viewer. Edge lighting is widely use in cinematic and environmental concept art.
The artwork below shows Star Lord, a character from Guardians of the Galaxy, hiding behind an huge structure. The sun was just above the top and to the side of the character, shining slightly toward the camera or viewers. A halo of warm light touches the side of the character.
