Digital painting tutorial painting wizard elf. In this tutorial, I will show you a step by step digital painting for a character that I did for Paizo Publication. The character is part of a Pathfinder series. This is a step by step process of how to create a character for a fantasy genre game.
I usually receive description from client for character concept illustration that I will be working on. This character assignment, I have to design a female elf caster. This is a female elf wizard with dark hair and orange-gold-colored eyes. She wears long red robes and holds a gnarled wooden staff. She’s holding an orb of magical golden fire in one hand.
First I will sketch some thumbnails base on the description. But if I already familiar with the subject, I will just dive right in. In this tutorial, I am going to show you the character design and illustration process. Again I would strongly recommend that you focus basic values or lighting then the rest will follow.
Here is a final character design for Wizard Elf, Iliara Starcloak.
Below are step by step how to paint a female elf. Step one, I sketch a basic female body in a casting action pose. It is very similar to gesture drawing but with more detail. Step two, I then assign color to skin tone and dress. Step three, I paint her hair then add lighting to her body. Step four, I decid to repaint her skin with slightly shift hue toward more pink/purple. Then I paint more light and shadow onto her face. Step five, I give her overall value using lighting. I just use normal mode and paint with color.
Step six, I paint her hand, the golden orb and more detail on dress and jewels. Step seven, I add paint her mid section then add belts and ornament to her leggings. Step eight, I then finish up the rest of the detail on her design.
