Concept art tutorial drawing Medusa. Here is another concept art I did recently for a client. Basically this sketch is a rough ideas about a character, I was trying to get a feel for how to make her design look beautiful but then scary, creepy, and threatening at the same time. The Medusa concept sketch is still very loose at this point, and I was also looking for composition, also to experiment and see what they look like. Concept art is used widely in cinematic, videogame and literature projects, to help convey a given message, situation or environment to the viewer. It could be a rough concept sketch like this one, or a highly polished conceptual artwork. Though this is just a concept sketch which I will take it further into the color refine conceptual or illustration later.
The Medusa was the daughter of Phorkys and Keto, the children of Gaia (Earth) and Okeanos (Ocean). She was one of the three sisters known as the Gorgons. The other two sisters were Sthenno and Euryale. Medusa was the only mortal out of the three. She was once very beautiful and lived far north.
There is a particular myth in which Medusa was originally a beautiful maiden. She desecrated Athena’s temple by lying there with Poseidon. Outraged, Athena punished her by turning her hair into snakes and cursing her by making her so ugly that who ever lookes at her eyes would turn into stone.
Medusa was killed by the hero Perseus with the help of Athena and Hermes. He killed her by cutting of her head and gave it to Athena, who placed it in the center of her Aegis, which she wore over her breastplate. Her blood gave birth to a creature, a beautiful Pegasus.
