How to draw hippopotamus. Learn to draw hippo step by step with easy to follow instruction. Again this time is another wild animal sketch study so I decided to sketch something basic or a bit intermediate. Practice drawing animals is always a good way to explore different forms of creature concept design. To be a well rounded concept artist, especially creature artists, you must practice animal drawings. In this tutorial, you will learn to draw a hippo from basic geometry shapes to start off with basic line sketch until final gray scale drawing or illustration. Hippopotamus is one of the most fasinating animal, they are massive, strong and look very very kind. In reality, they are not kind. In fact, they are very territorial and aggressive and could kill even most fearsome predators like crocodiles, hyenas, sometimes lions etc.
Hippopotamus is a large, mostly herbivorous mammal in sub-Saharan Africa. After the elephant and rhinoceros, the hippopotamus is the third largest land mammal. The hippopotamus is recognizable by its barrel-shaped torso, enormous mouth and teeth, nearly hairless body, stubby legs and tremendous size. With a great whoosh and a snort, a seemingly quiet African river suddenly erupts with the appearance of a great huge beast. Then whoosh, another surfaces, and another, and another. One by one, about 15 hippopotamuses rise to the surface of the calm water. The hippopotamus is one of the most aggressive creatures in the world and is often regarded as one of the most dangerous animals in Africa.
Below is a final drawing of a Hippopotamus.
Below are step by step how to draw Hippo. The best practice is to observe them in the zoo and life draw. Using references is also a good practice, but seeing them in real life is a lot better for your practice. Step one, I just capture the biggest shape I saw first. So I drew a shape for its body and massive head shape. I tend to simplify the subject when I start drawing to get the correct proportion first. Step two, once I have the main part of the subject and its proportion, then I start refining other element such as ears, snout, and eyess. I still keep it simple at this stage. Step three, once I have the correct proportion and shape, I can start refine the drawing and make it a simple hippo drawing.
