How to draw female character design in normal clothing. Learn to draw woman character with modern clothing. This design, I was going to use it for modern day zombie apocalypse comics story. I use the existing face or portrait design that I have from previous tutorial (go watch how to draw Batgirl tutorial with videos). I just happen to like that face so I thought, I should do something better with it and create a new design for her. But still I did tweak the facial and hair just tiny bit so that it fits the new design. This female character design sketch with full process. I just had some time last night to sketch a character in contemporary costume. Usually I tend to design a fantasy or period or sci-fi costume. This one I felt like I should do something normal in the current period environment.
Well, this one is pretty much a study that I intend to do. I am trying to render or paint leather and to get its values correctly. It is still in process and on its way (hopefully) to be finished.
It is a good exercise for any artist to study painting of fabric such as silk, satin, leather because those fabric when put right next to metal, skin, or plain cottons, they have unique quality and reflect light differently. In other words, it has its own way of showing off its values on a painting. If you look at many classical painting, they are great examples, especially John Singer Sargent, Ander Zorn, etc.
Here is a final female character design with modern clothes or outfit.
Below are step by step how to draw female character with clothing. I painted more detail (still in gray scale) and trying to bring the leather texture from her jacket using values. In general, object has its own reflective scale which make it interact with light differently. Like I stated previously metal and leather looks different because how it’s interact with light. As painters, we have to take careful observation of these kinds of things because it will make us more efficient in capturing different materials when painting. Understanding lighting aka values more and more will take us to the next level.
Good exercise for this kind of thing is to paint a still life arrangement of apple, grapes right next to metal cup or teapot. It will make your understanding of lighting better and you then will know what I was talking about.
And LUCA (one of our favorite readers and friends) said, “I do that still life exercise about 5 times a week and it really helps me understand form and color.”
Here is the last process of shading before final.
