It’s called Chinese Vampire, but I actually thing this creature quality is a lot more like zombie than vampire. The official root name is Jiang Shi (simplified Chinese: 僵尸 or traditional Chinese: 僵屍, it literally means “stiff corpse”). They are reanimated corpses that hop around, killing living creatures to absorb life essence (气/氣qì) from their victims. Jiāngshī is pronounced gœngsi in Cantonese, or kyonshi in Japanese. They are said to be created when a person’s soul fails to leave the deceased’s body, due to improper death, suicide, or just wanting to cause trouble.

Below are step by step painting of Chinese vampire zombie. Step one, I just paint the basic shape that will build up into a character’s body and face. Step two, I refine its face to have more unique personality look of a character design. Step three, I cleaned up the back ground then add basic light and shadow along its body. Step four, I decided to change the color of the light source toward warm hue. Then I paint and simplify the value of the overall character.
