How to paint landscape mountain river

How to paint landscape mountain river.  Environmental sketch concept digital painting video tutorial, Cliff Mountain Cloud Sky water landscape.

Here is another environmental landscape sketch exercise I did. This one is pretty similar to the previous environmental sketch tutorial except I focus more on simplifying shapes and strokes. Details painting is good only when the moment comes, painting big scale stuff I believe I better off make it simple first and arrange the overall composition and values before going in and add unnecessary detail. It’s easily said than done. But practice make us better artist. So…keep painting and drawing, also important to keep keen eyes for observing and study.

Compare to the previous one ( Environment digital painting process ), I prefer this piece more because of its simplicity and implication with just big strokes rather than trying to go in and fill all the unnecessary information. The lighting, depth and color range are also a bit better in my opinion.

Anyway there are more video tutorials on environmental concept sketch go to and pick on of the following: Draw and paint Environmental concept Sand Valley, Drawing and painting environmental concept Magma Fall, how to paint magma river concept art, and Environmental concept tutorial IceScape.

Below are step by step images painting tutorial for you guys to watch to go along with the video tutorial. Step 1, I just rough out a sketch using three value.  You can see the darkest value will be the mountain, but now they are just shape.  Step 2, I begin to add some cloud using soft brush and hard brush.  At this stage, I am still using Photoshop default round brushes.  Step three, you can see that I start to flesh out one of the mountain range on the left and add some dimension to the water.  Step four, I begin to paint more on the water by adding some wave line.  Watch the painting video tutorial for more insight detail.  If you don’t get it the first time, I recommend watch it a few time then you should be good to go.

All paintings start with just one color. Watch more of my videos on Youtube then you will eventually get it. I don’t want to write an essay here. That’s why I made +300 videos to explain what I do. Good luck

Did you see the banner link “Download Free e-book: intro to digital painting”? Why do you think I create that? Yes, it will answer all your basic questions. Download it.

  7. pp shiju says:

  8. Louise says:

Do you use full opacy in the pencil when you draw?

  9. Xia Taptara says:

You could or I could. It is not all about layers. Layer are for convenience and workflow. Most important things you have to know are correct shapes, values/color and edges.
First, take your time in drawing and painting. Know what you want to achieve.
    Read all of them carefully.
    Focus on value when painting

I use a few layers at the time then I merge them all. Focus on value (light and dark). Be honest and trust your eye because your brain will tell you otherwise. Draw what you see, not what you think the object should look like.

Do you draw all those with one layer? or in several layers. (because it seems like you are fixing and adding colours in one layer) I am really astonished by your work. I am working hard to reach the goal that I want to meet, but it is really hard. I wish I can be as good as you : )

  11. Xia Taptara says:

Yes they would be different. I would stick with Wacom tablet. If you want something similar but same control go Wacom cintiq.

  12. John McLean says:

Do you think there’s any benefit or disadvantage to using a slate pc (one of the newer ones coming out this fall) over a Wacom tablet and a normal PC. I only ask in terms of control, accuracy and quality of the image, not in regards to running the programs.
