Congratulations to all of you who have got yourselves into the top10. And good luck all!
NOTICE: Khoa Ho’s picture posted above is NOT his final submission! Make sure you look at his final before you vote.
Imagine I would end up in this company… thank you all for voting.
And for sure there were better entries than mine that did not make it to the top ten. Anyways… I learned a lot both from myself and from all the other great pictures. And of course from the idrawgirls-tutorials i dug into a little deeper, just because of the competition approach. So even if I would not have gotten a singel vote the mission of learning was completed. And that’s the importaint isn’t it…?
Thanks again, of course most of all to the idrawgirls team for arranging this.
I voted for the one that looks like susan sarandon…
@Jeremy Thanks Fixed! He has duplicated posts. Otherwise his would have score +40 in the general round.
@segujo It is good for you, there is another round and the next. Contest will always push yourself into another level. Great job!
Absolutely unfairly!!!
Guys next time you can just draw the line or something like that and find +100 friends and you will win… hard working or talent is not necessary.
good luck to everyone!!!
@Beckjann Do you want a judge panel instead?
Good point from Beckjann. Although a panel only might work, maybe its still a good idea to keep the voting system in. Combine it, like a lot of those shows on TV these days.
@Knuckle Thanks bro…now I am locking IP and cookies so. I am setting up robots to watch the back end activities also. Any flag, they will ping me. I’ve seen some flags earlier but now…it should be good.
I think a judge panel would make so much more sense. Other than that I love the artistsarena!
@Jeremy I have faith in people. But yes I know what you mean. Hey! this site is build for you guys and you guys should have the right to VOTE! And help each other out. And stuff
The voting discussion…
I think the best way would be a judge panel for making things fair. Voting in small communities like this is, you can always find some freinds to register and vote for you. You might just need some few votes to gain places.
But on the other hand… the greatest reward is the feeling of appreciation and achievment, and if you know yourself you have collected extra votes you rob yourself from that feeling. For a losy computor game…
And also… maybe the voting should not be open until the time is up. The people who have been active in updating WIP:s (including myself) have a much better chance of collecting stray votes compared to the guys uploading their work just before the deadline. Or perhaps that is a reasonable advantage for people that are somewhat ‘extra dedicated’…?
@ Xia Ya, maybe… What if you picked out your top ten and then let the community vote on those. What do you think of that? I mean, I saw some awesome work that didn’t even make it to the finals. I’m just sayin.
@Jeremy Good point! I will put the poll up for Round 2 and see what they think.
as i said it many many times – Xia you are one of my favorite artists. Thank you for this site. And I understand that it’s not easy to create something like this spending all your free time for us. I love the idea of CG Artists Arena and I look forward to try my skills in next round if voting system change. I just was little bit dissapointed.
@Beckjann thanks bro, I try. I think everything will work out. If I see any flag on the back end, I will take the entry out and make it disqualified. I am getting there.
Well I think I know who the winner is.
I just want to ask is this : http://pathetic13.deviantart.com/#/d3dtakr a violation , I don’t have that much subs in dev. but still ? If it is I will remove it immediately . Thanks
@Stas Wait? Are you Stanilav Aldinov? or Stas Armandox?
I don’t think it is against the rule, but it is a bit unfair. Smart marketing and promoting I would say, still unfair to others. But ask the community and see what they think. You are part of it, I am just one voice.
Yep , Im Stanislav just in Bulgaria Stas is the short name
like Jonathan – John . And Armandox is my nickname. Well ill wait and see if the community is against it – I’ll take the post down … Would be awesome to win some tutorials
I’ve enjoyed this friendly competition. Even if the voting system is unfair for some people, I don’t really mind. What really matters for me isn’t the prizes, but basically being able to showcase your work to an active audience who is both yearning to teach and learn. Thanks Xia for hosting this. Competitions are always rocky initially, but I’m sure soon it’ll be fair for people.
i thinks its okay, and it promotes the community! the more entries, the more art, the better.
@stas Cool, good entry. I would have thought you are Polish or Belarussian. Sweet! Good work!
@Franklin & @Jacob You have good entry, GREAT work! Thanks for participating. This is just the beginning, as it goes on it will get MUCH MUCH better and a lot more fun. My hope is to discover a bunch of new generation BAD@SS artists before everyone else does.
Thanks . ^_^ I would suggest the same as Jeremy Adams . That you pick the top entries and than the we will vote ! Or maybe the voting should be open for a few days after all the finals are done, coz some good entries are posted just before the dead line , but they don’t have a chance because the early entries would have gain lead in votes .
i second what stas said! thank you xia, for your kind words, for setting this up, for providing really helpful tutorials and especially for dedicating your time to people like us
I second what Jakob said! To put it short, You are awesome!
All these entries are amazing and they work getting in. One thing that buggers me is Khoas. I think you (xia) should make sure they meet the target. As awesome as Khoas art piece is. I think he strayed too far to the actual brief. Not complaining because i still think he deserves to be in the top10. But maybe next time make sure people are doing as the competition asks?
Again keep up the hard work. You’re doing us a big big favor by putting up these competitions. It motivates me to draw because i can compare my work, learn from others and that satisfaction of completing a piece of art because i WANTED too!
Great entries, awesome finalists.
It was fun joining this contest. Maybe Xia can go around and give a little pointer for each entry next round, but I’m sure you’re super busy. I was hoping I would get more constructive critiques though. Gook luck to the finalists.
Oh I also think a judge panel is also a good idea. They should pick the piece and maybe point out why they pick it. So we can all learn from it. I’m doing this mostly to get better at art, so any pointer is most appreciated.
@Jeremy Adams, Yea that’s what I think should be done too. Have Xia (and who ever else) pick out the top ones then have the community vote it out, or at least have their votes sway into a decision if he were to do a judge panel. But I DO think that the community voting needs to be controlled one way or another.
Dear Xia,
+165 votes but 155 members…. does not compute. I thought only community members could vote.
~mg
Hey Xia, you might want to fix your new rating system, I think it is a bit messed up. H-)
Hello Xia!!
I have a suggestion, why don’t you call some professional artists to judge the pieces on next round?
Thank you guys!
@Hoangle I don’t think these guys need any pointer anymore. At this point they would know what to fix.
@havokreed, Kazuo Maruyama We are discussing that option. Three judges (Kekai, Laurel, Jason or any professional concept artists available at the time) will pick the top ten on the next round. But the final round will be open to public.
@Miguel Garcia We are now have 387 users, not 155 users. 155 was the first three to four days. More are coming.
@Jeremy Adams It is my intention since we won’t be voting to pick the top ten any longer. Now we can have stars system to motivate people for all the posts. And in final, we will just use poll. sorry about the mess, it is still in Beta testing. It will be much prettier when it is done and we have more budget.
@ Xia Oh ok, my bad.
Either system will have its pros and cons. Even with a judging panel people can still get their friends to vote on their artwork. However, at least this way there won’t be any “undeserving” pieces in the top 10 spots. I trust that Xia and the other judges will have an open mind to all art styles. It would be nice to have a variety of art styles and not just a bunch of pieces that look similar because it’s the style the judges prefer.
I also hope the community grows a bit. I submitted a piece in the first few days of this contest and in the end only 1 person gave me any feedback =( . I wasn’t entering to win, I was hoping to get some critique so I can improve.
Anyway, good luck to the top 10 and thanks for setting this up for everyone to enjoy. It was fun and I hope there are more things like this in the future =)
great competition guys enjoyed it
hope you find an answer to the voting system
plenty of works which didnt make the cut but were worthy
of a place here.
if there indeed is a judging panel then there must be a list of criteria that you judge the artworks against.
eg.
creativity
technical skill
etc..
anyways thanks xia for everything looking forward to the next comp.
So far I’ve just enjoyed the experience of getting on board with this community in its early stages. I only managed to get one WIP sorted for the first competition due to other commitments but so far i think artistsarena is brilliant, a great opportunity to mix with other aspiring artists like myself without the ‘clique’ factor of other forums and communities that are out there. Perhaps the initial voting system had a few flaws but i’m sure as the competitions and the site develop it will be resolved. I liked Kazuo’s idea of other guest artists getting involved with the judging from time to time that could really add some excitement to the competitions.
So far Xia, i think this is a great community that you have set up and thank you for doing so, i’m looking forward to the next competition brief now.
First off i would like to say thank you to Xia for the challenge and bringing us a new site to hang out at
looking forward to the next challenge, can’t wait for that really :p
as much as people are concerned about the voting system and who should be in the final 10, i do hope you guys “learned” something from the challenge it self, its what Xia wanted for us all really, so that we all gain something at the end of each challenge, sure its nice to win prizes but what is more valuable is knowledge that will make us a better artist
so i hope we all participate better in our next challenge, so that we give and receive comments even more to help each other become better at what we love to do, that is art. This is a fairly new art site, its up to us to make or break this community, i have seen a lot of “new” sites out there that just failed cause there wasn’t enough participation or as simple as “people are not there for the right reasons” and the mentality of the community itself breaks it apart. It is a shame really, so i really hope that does not happen here and we can all prove that a small community like us can and will work with the right attitude
ill say that the best prize for anyone to win is when someone like Xia comes out to you and say “come work for me!” – that is the best damn prize
Everyone is a bit serious about this contest… I guess it is a bit unbalanced this round. I think most people thought voting start after the deadline, if no one thought that… then maybe just me. But, I think the contest turn out pretty good. There are a lot of different style and interpretations. And personally, the best piece in my opinion is in the finalist… so it’s not completely unfair. Can’t wait for next contest!!
Oh and Xia, I know the finalist don’t really need the pointer. I meant next contest not next round, sorry. And I meant more like pointer for the ones that didn’t make it. Mainly I need pointers haha.
And instead of physical rewards, we can have stars like you used to have Xia. Add little stars or trophies next to the winners profile info, maybe have an editor pick as well. Just some recognition, because there are a lot of outstanding art piece for just this first contest. If they collect enough stars or trophy then they can trade it in for your tutorials… wait… if they’re good enough to win… then they probably don’t need it…darn it, never mind… how about you give the tutorials to last place and the game to first place? haha (joking joking)
Thanks for including me in the top 10! However, I agree with what’s been said, that the voting system is unbalanced. I’ve seen a lot of wonderful works that didn’t make it because they came late, and probably people didn’t even see them. Those that refreshed their posts often also got more votes, and those that published their works for all their friends to see got even more..
I think that voting should be within the community, and maybe we shouldn’t publish our works elsewhere to get votes.
I think, actually, that the best way to choose a winner is by the pros, who should be the judges. Pros would know to take into account all the elements of the picture, it’s relation to the brief, etc, not just what looks “PWEETY!!”.
Also I would love to get a critique from you pros!
The contest is cool, it really motivated me to make something, can’t wait for next round!
Lol @ eyal “omg dat sooo pweeeeetty :3″ but yep, i agree!!
I’m quite sad to not see FinalKnight’s work in the top 10. Anyway good luck to all of you guys and keep participating in Xia’s community that has some purity in it I feel
)
Not bad for the first round contest.
The vote system needs more improvements, especially one that favors competitors with too many friends. I see in this final list works who not supposed to get here and many other good works who have been left out (for example: Luca Cauchi or Beckjann Duvair. From my point of view, only two or three competitors deserves a place in this final, at list they finished the works in the terms of contest (J. Siebentritt and Khoa Ho or Megat Azani).
Anyway, it is a start and its fun
Wow!Great entries!Congrats to the finalists!
@MrPie: what did i miss?
the very first winner conrgats J. Siebentritt
(For competition’s sake), there are so many different skill levels here, maybe there should be some sort of ranked division based on the quality of work. I mean, compare J. Siebentritt work with everyone else’. He is on a completely different level. Out of all the other preliminary posts I say, maybe 2-3 other people were capable of producing that quality of work.
I know this isn’t just a competition, but to improve upon your work. But for the sake of it partly being a competition, it may be a good idea. Just a thought.
@havokreed
the only problem with that is how do you rank artists there is obviously different skills and different styles its impossible to categorise them and make seperate competitions to cater for each skill level.
concept art.org has similar competitions and the top artists always win and that gives you something to aspire to, but concept art.org has a number of top artists competing in it so its a lot more competitive.
@havokreed i thought about the rank thing too when I saw some of the submissions, but I must a agreed with gibbo19. I think it makes you try hard and strive for a higher level of quality when you compete with someone better. The prize is not the game you get, but the level of improvements you get every time you compete.
